Junaid Kamal Ahmed
Junaid Kamal Ahmed is the Vice President of Operations for the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), which is the political risk insurance and credit enhancement agency of the World Bank Group (WBG). He is responsible for promoting and strengthening MIGA's brand collaboration with the World Bank Group, as well as with financial institutions, private investors, and development participants, to initiate and pursue meaningful and influential projects. Mr. Ahmed also leads the operational team of the institution, fulfilling MIGA's responsibilities by mobilizing private funds for development projects in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDE).
Mr. Ahmed is from Bangladesh and has previously served as the Country Director of the World Bank in India. He joined the World Bank as a young professional in 1991, dedicated to infrastructure development in Africa and Eastern Europe. Afterwards, he held multiple management positions and led World Bank projects in different regions such as Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, and South Asia. Mr. Ahmed previously served as the Director of the Office of the World Bank Group and had previously served as a Special Assistant to the President. Mr. Ahmed worked at the World Bank for a period of time in Johannesburg and New Delhi, and became a core member of the World Development Report: Making Services Work for the Poor in 2004.
Throughout his career, Mr. Ahmed has focused on the role of service delivery in building and utilizing national capabilities and markets to achieve economic and sustainable development goals. Mr. Ahmed's focus is on public finance and federalism, as well as urban government management in different national contexts, from fragile and conflict environments, low - and middle-income to large federations. In addition, he is committed to the infrastructure sector and public-private partnerships with municipal governments, with a focus on mobilizing private equity and long-term debt in the capital market. As the first Senior Director of the World Bank's Water Global Practice and former Country Director of India, Mr. Ahmed initiated and supervised billions of dollars in departmental and national plans related to finance, infrastructure, and human development. He is recognized for his strategic leadership in the team and has gained significant influence.Mr. Ahmad holds a PhD in Applied Economics from Stanford University, a 2-year Master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University, and a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Brown University. Before joining the World Bank Group, Mr. Ahmed worked in the field of trade and industrial policy at the Bangladesh Government Planning Commission. Mr. Ahmed has published articles on various aspects of fiscal federalism and decentralization, as well as infrastructure reform and service provision.
